The set up consists of a glass column packed with Rasching rings. Liquid is fed at the top of the column through distributor. The solute gas and air are measured separately, mixed in a mixing chamber and then passed through the packed column vertically upward and absorbed in liquid. In the process of gas absorption, a mixture of gases is contacted with a liquid, for the purpose of dissolving one or more components of the gas and to provide a solution of them into the liquid. In it, a gas phase consisting of CO2 and air is introduced into the bottom of the packed column. Adjustment of their flow ratio is obtained by manual valves. A sample of the gas mixture is sent to a CO2 concentration sensor located inside the electric console, and readings of flows and CO2 percentage concentration are seen on the display. For the liquid phase, water (or a solution of sodium hydroxide) is pumped to the top of the column where it falls through the packing material. The contact of the two phases is in counter-current operation and enhances the mixing and diffusion of CO2 in the liquid phase at the conditions of room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

It consists of a benchtop unit onto which are mounted two 250mm long, 10mm diameter borosilicate glass chromatography columns. Both are equipped with adjustable end pieces to allow different bed heights to be investigated. On the top of each column are septum injectors to allow introduction of a sample onto the column surface. The columns are fed by a three-channel peristaltic pump of an eight-roller design in order to give smooth flow. The pump has variable-speed drive and a wide range of tube bores can be used thus giving a very wide flow-rate range. Switching valves allow the operator to easily select the desired column for operation. A bubble trap is fitted before the inlet to the columns to prevent air from entering. The outlet from the column passes to a UV optical flow cell for online measurement of sample elution. Liquid exiting the flow cell can either be led to drain or collected using the fraction collector. The fraction collector, which has capacity for 48 3ml test tubes, is timer controlled.

The single tube-in-jacket evaporator replicates industrial units which often contain scores of much longer tubes within the steam space. The component parts of the industrial process have been scaled down, feed tank, vapour / liquid separator, condenser, concentrate tank, condensate tank, CIP pump and vacuum pump, all manufactured from hygienic materials such as stainless steel, PTFE and glass. The system is supported within a stainless steel framework and requires only connection to suitable steam, electrical and water services for operation. Only 0.65m² of floor space is required to install the evaporator and it has been designed to fit easily into a room of standard height.
