Heat Transfer In The Tubular Exchanger is used to demonstrate the characteristic properties of heat transfer in a tubular heat exchanger. Tubular heat exchangers represent the simplest type of heat exchanger and are the preferred solution for transferring heat with high pressure differences or between high viscosity media (sludge). This type is also used to enable the temperature of the transported medium to be kept constant. The experimental unit features a pipe-in-pipe tube as the heat exchanger, a heated tank and pump for the hot water circuit, connections for the cold water circuit, and displays and controls. Hot water in the inner tube and cold water in the outer tube flow either in a parallel flow or in a counter flow. Part of the thermal energy of the hot water is transferred to the cold water. Valves are used to adjust the flow of hot and cold water. The cold water circuit is fed from the laboratory supply.

Fluidised beds are used in a broad range of applications, e.g. for industrial drying, fluidised bed combustion or heat treatment of materials. Bulk solids are transformed from a fixed bed into a fluidised bed when fluids pass through them. In terms of fluid mechanical and thermodynamic properties, the fluidised bed behaves like an incompressible fluid. The heat transfer between hot fluid and a fixed bed occurs mainly through heat conduction. Due to the movement of the particles, the fluid and the particles are very well mixed in the fluidised bed. This enables optimum heat transfer between fluid and particles and ensures an even temperature distribution in the reactor.

The periphery of the disc is cooled by water passing through a copper tube bonded to the disc. Six type K thermocouples are positioned at 10mm radial increments from the heated centre to the periphery.

  • An insulated, 110mm diameter brass disc 3.2mm thick is heated in its centre by a nominal 100W heater (operating at 240v ac maximum) which is fitted with a high temperature limit switch. The power supplied to the heater is controlled and measured by the Heat Transfer Service Unit.
  • The periphery of the disc is cooled by water passing through a copper tube bonded to the disc.
  • Six type K thermocouples are positioned at 10mm radial increments from the heated centre to the periphery.
  • All six thermocouples plug directly into the Heat Transfer Service Unit and temperatures are displayed on its digital panel meter

The heating element contained within the test vessel is an electrical resistance element whose input power is controlled by a potentiometer. A temperature indicator monitors the temperature at each thermocouple, one measuring ambient and one on the heating element. A Bourdon tube gauge mounted on the unit measures pressure from +1 bar to -1 bar and to cater for the high vacuum conditions a McLeod gauge, also panel mounted, covers the range 0 to 200 mbar absolute. The self-contained vacuum pump fitted to the equipment caters for vacuum conditions down to less than 0.1 mbar, and there is provision for an external pressure source input to be used to allow investigations up to 2 bar absolute.

It is self contained and built into a high quality instrument case designed for bench mounting with the experiment easily visible. It consists of the heat proof glass observation vessel containing the liquid and housing the nickel filament whose length and diameter can be measured, together with an additional low voltage heating element for rapid warm up. A second vessel with cooling system accommodates the second arm of the bridge, a variable voltage supply for filament heating, the AC bridge circuit, a panel mounted ammeter and voltmeter, switch gear, electrical stirring system and a 0-105ºC thermometer. A small oscilloscope necessary to balance the bridge is not included in the supply. The filament heating circuit voltage does not exceed 12V and the system has an isolated mains transformer.

The apparatus consists of a vertical stack of specimens clamped between an electrically heated source at the top and a water cooled base, all contained within a Dewar vessel and furnished with a radiation shield and anticonvection baffle. The specimens are fitted with very small thermocouples at known distances apart and connected via a selector switch to a digital temperature readout. The heating current is supplied from a variable voltage power pack and displayed on a digital ammeter. The water cooled base is designed as a calorimeter to measure the heat flow and fitted with very accurate thermometers in the water circuit.
