A combination of refined oil, water and air enters the vessel, the flow is directed to the spherical end of the vessel where primary separation occurs and then flows through the vessel where it meets the coalescer. At the secondary separating section, the fluids are allowed to slow down and separate by gravity. The water being the heaviest in gravity stays at the bottom while the oil floats on top and the gas occupies the void space in the vessel.

An arrangement of up to date integrated circuits is used to simulate boiler pressure and burner control together with the sensing and control systems associated with modern boiler systems. The simulated boiler itself is constructed from a clear acrylic tank and thus the demonstration unit provides a clear visual appreciation of the operating characteristics of the various level controls i.e. float operated magnetic, reed or electronic system using electrode sensors. The operation of these level sensing devices can readily be investigated since they may be removed from the Demonstration Unit, dismantled and re-assembled, without the attendant problems which would occur on an operational boiler. These systems would not normally all be fitted in the same boiler but are included in this unit to give the student an appreciation of the characteristics of each system. Conversion of water from the boiler into steam is simulated so that the level sensors need to operate as in a true Boiler system. A Boiler Water Gauge is fitted to the Boiler Drum so that possible misuse of this item can be demonstrated clearly and safely. This Gauge can also be used to demonstrate the method of changing a ‘sight glass’ for such a gauge under simulated working conditions, a circumstance which can be ‘safely’ taught on this Demonstration Unit.

The setup consists of a process tank in which compressed air enters through a Pneumatic Control Valve. The pressure transmitter is fitted on the process tank. The air pressure in process tank is sensed by the transmitter and communicated to the digital indicating controller. This measured variable is compared with the set point by controller and output is generated and given to i/p converter, which in turn supply the 3- 15 psig pressure to vary the opening of the pneumatic control valve to eliminate the error observed. As the opening of pneumatic control valve varies, the pressure in the process tank gets effected. This process goes on until the set point target is achieved. A ball valve is also provided in the process tank to disturb the system and to observe the effect of disturbance. These units along with necessary piping are supported in a well- designed housing and are fixed on base plate.The present set-up is completely computerized controlled. The digital indicating controller has a facility to interface the system with computer which enables to change the PID parameters using computer.
