A variable delivery fan supplies metered air to a pretreatment plenum chamber where it can be heated and humidified to a variable and measured extent. The air is next passed through a filter of the type used in commercial systems and then cooled by the evaporation of refrigerant in a built-in condensing refrigeration unit. Any moisture condensed from the air at this stage is collected in a measuring cylinder. The air then passes through a reheating chamber with a measurable heat input facility before discharge to atmosphere. The design of the unit is such as to ensure that all readings provided by the instrument relate to a proper homogeneous air flow. The refrigerant compressor is a single cylinder unit driven by an AC motor.

Absorption refrigeration systems operate using thermal energy. They use the principle of liquids evaporating already at low temperatures when pressure is reduced. This basic principle is demonstrated in the experimental unit with the example of an ammonia-water solution with the ammonia acting as refrigerant. In the evaporator the liquid ammonia evaporates and withdraws heat from the environment. To keep the evaporation pressure low, the ammonia steam in the absorber is absorbed by the water. In the next step, ammonia is permanently removed from the high concentration ammonia solution to prevent the absorption process from being halted. For this purpose, the high concentration ammonia solution is heated in a generator until the ammonia evaporates again. In the final step, the ammonia steam is cooled in the condenser to the base level, condenses and is returned to the evaporator. The low concentration ammonia solution flows back to the absorber. To maintain the pressure differences in the system, hydrogen is used as an auxiliary gas.

The setup of represents a typical refrigeration circuit consisting of a hermetic compressor, condenser, evaporator and expansion element. Evaporator and condenser are designed as finned tube heat exchangers. The pipes of both heat exchangers are partially transparent to visualise the process of the phase transition during evaporation and condensing. Three capillary tubes of different lengths and a thermostatic expansion valve can be compared as expansion elements. The trainer is equipped with a receiver for refrigerant. Using the receiver, refrigerant can be added to or removed from the refrigeration circuit. This allows for the effects of overfilling or underfilling of the system to be examined.

The unit enables the students to study the basic principals of Ice Plant Trainer within a short period. The test rig is designed for the study of thermodynamics of vapour Compression refrigeration cycle by way of demonstration and experimentation. It has a facility to measure various parameters for experimentation. Ice cans are kept in liquid tank, which is cooled by the refrigerant evaporator.
