1.0 metre flat bridge deck is formed using two symmetrical arches. The arches have springings (hinges) at their outer most ends and at the crown thus creating the three hinges. The left hand springing is held in position whilst allowing rotational movement of the arch section. The right hand springing allows the arch section to rotate and move horizontally against a load cell on a track plate. The load cell measures the horizontal thrust created when a uniformly distributed load or tandem load is applied to the arch bridge deck. The horizontal thrust from the load cell is measured using the Interface. The tandem load simulates a rolling vehicle, and can be dismantled to produce two point loads of different magnitude. Two arch arrangements are supplied. One being a symmetrical arch and the other being an unsymmetrical arch. Both being easily interchangeable. The arch bridge deck allows for unrestricted positioning of the loads along the arch span. A comprehensive instruction manual for lecturer and student, giving full details on apparatus assembly and operation as well as example results. All necessary assembly and operational tools are provided.

The Two Hinged Parabolic Arch with uniform cross section has a span of 1.0metre and a rise of 0.2metre. One end is pinned in precision bearings set in a fixed springing attached to the Universal Frame and Stand. The other end has bearings running on a track plate to which is attached an integral load cell for measuring the horizontal thrust created when the arch is loaded. The horizontal thrust is created by applying loads on the arch via seven equi-spaced load chains and hangers vertically suspended from the arch. For model analysis measurements, pins are set on the arch at each load hanger. A dial gauge on a moveable stand is also provided for this work. The load cell and dial gauge output must be fed into the Interface.

A 'rectangular' Portal frame and an 'S' frame made from rectangular solid steel section are provided with a range of fixed or pinned ends and simple supports to enable each frame to be set up in the Universal Frame and Stand and loaded horizontally and vertically. One end of the portal frame pivots on a knife edge, while the other end is free to move horizontally on a track plate against a load cell. Horizontal reactions are monitored using the integral load cell within the track plate and its output fed into the Interface. Frame deflection and sway is measured using the dial gauges supplied. Load hangers, calibrated weights, cords and pulleys are provided to apply vertical and/or horizontal loading to the frames.

A two bay, 45° cantilevered truss is suspended from the inside vertical edge of the Universal Frame and Stand (sold separately). At the far end of the truss a screwjack loading mechanism with integral load cell applying the truss loading.Each truss member is joined at its end by means of pins, which make up the true pin jointed assembly. The strain and hence force exerted in each member is measured using strain gauge technology applied to each truss member. The experiment hardware provides two end supports, one for completely rigid end fixings, whilst the other giving horizontal travel. Both supports create simple supports (knife edges) and have clamp plates which created fixed ends by restricting the end rotation of the test beam. The test beams have a single point load applied using the fine screw jack mechanism with integral load cell supplied. The displacement of the test beam within its elastic and plastic regions is measured using a dial gauge and this along with the load cell output connect into the Interface. A set of black mild steel beams are supplied with further sets available. A comprehensive instruction manual for lecturer and student, giving full details on apparatus assembly and operation as well as example results. Plastic Bending of Portals are mounted within two “ground” supports, in either a pinned or fixed condition. A proportioning bar is held horizontally by loading chains that run to the portal frame and to the screwjack loading mechanism. Depending on the position of the loading mechanism on the proportioning bar depends on the extent of the load being applied either horizontally or vertically. The load applied is measured using the load cell in the loading mechanism, which is fed directly into the Interface. Two moveable dial gauges are used to monitor the deflections into the plastic range of deformation of the portal. Additional portal sets are available as an optional extra.

When simply supported beams are loaded two main forces are created, bending and shear. These forces are internal and cannot easily be seen. This experiment brings these internal forces from inside the beam to outside the beam so that students can visually see the beam deflecting and shear forces acting. Each beam is simply supported on vertical supports which can be easily moved to create varying support positions and beam spans. At the ‘cut’ section, bearings in one beam straddle a vertical bearing track in the mating beam. This ensures free vertical movement for monitoring shear forces. Although beam bending is permitted, it is counteracted by the bearings and a tension spring supported horizontally from underneath the beams. The force transducer is supplied with a connection lead to connect its output directly into the Interface (sold separately). Special load hangers are provided that fit over the beams. The load hangers can be positioned accurately along each beams length by using the graduated scales attached to the side of the beams. A full set of slotted, calibrated weights is included.

Experiment investigating the unsymmetrical bending and shear centre of different sectioned beams when the loading is not in the plane of a principal axis. A ‘U’ section, ‘L’ section and rectangular beam cantilever is horizontally supported within a rotating clamp which fits in a substantial frame attached to the Universal Frame and Stand. The rotating clamp enables the loading and deflection planes to be set relative to the cross section axes. When a simply supported beam is loaded along its length two main forces occur internally; shear and bending. Bending can be seen visually but shear is not so easy. This experiment takes the internal forces from inside the unit to the outside so that the students can see clearly how the beam reacts. Each beam is simply supported on vertical supports which can be positioned in a variety of positions along the beam lengths. At the ‘cut’ section, a bearing in one beam rests inside a radiused pocket of the other beam. This restricts any vertical movement between the two beams, but does not restrict rotation between the two beams and hence bending is not restricted. In their unloaded state the beams are leveled using the level indicator provided. Loads are applied to the beam using the load hangers and calibrated weights set. The force transducer connects to the Interface.

Three piers measure vertical reaction forces with their integral load cell which connect directly to the Interface. Each pier caters for simply supported or continuous beams and their beam attachments allow for rotation but no vertical movement during testing. Sinking supports can be studied due to the fact that each reaction pier has a height adjustment system and integral dial gauge attached. A fourth pier clamps a cantilever or the fixed end of a beam. A double pulley assembly provides vertical loading of the beam. Point loads and uniformly distributed loads can be applied to the beams using the set of calibrated weights and hangers supplied. Three test beams in steel, aluminium and brass are supplied and their deflections are monitored using dial gauges on moveable stands. The reaction piers can be moved anywhere within the working area of the Universal Frame and Stand and allows a variety of beam spans to be achieved.

Two support brackets fix into the Universal Frame and Stand allowing the support of beams along their length and at different spans. Each support bracket comes supplied with knife edges or clamp plates to enable different end fixing conditions to be used, i.e. simply supported, cantilever, propped cantilever and encastre. Cantilevers can be created using one of the supports fitted with a clamp supplied. Three moveable dial gauges, mounted on moveable stands measure beam deflections and slope.     Span bridge has a flat deck and solid spandrels to the three spans. The bridge is supported on the two inner piers and is anchored to the two outer piers to provide a pair of cantilevers on which the suspended centre span is carried. The four piers and the centre span supports incorporate reaction measuring load cells. The bridge is loaded using either point loads (25 or 10N) or through a tandem rolling load of 25 + 10N value. The tandem loads are linked thus simulating a vehicle passing over the bridge deck. The tandem load can be arranged such that the 10N load is leading or trailing. By separating the tandem loads it is possible to obtain the influence lines for the bridge.
