Pure water in the boiler is heated to its boiling point using a pair of cartridge heaters with variable power control. A sight glass on the front of the boiler enables the internal processes to be observed, namely boiling patterns at the surface of the water, and also permits the water level in the boiler to be monitored. Saturated steam leaving the top of the boiler passes around the pipe loop before condensing and returning to the base of the boiler for reheating. The operating range of the boiler and loop is 0-7 bar gauge. The top limb of the pipe loop incorporates a Platinum Resistance Thermometer (PRT), temperature sensor and an electronic pressure sensor to measure the properties of the saturated steam. A filling point on the top limb enables the loop to be filled with pure water and permits all air to be vented safely before sealing the loop for pressurised measurements. A vapour offtake, with isolating valve, enables steam from within the loop to be passed through a throttling calorimeter, the purpose of which is to demonstrate how the dryness fraction of the saturated steam in the loop can be determined. The steam expands to atmospheric pressure as it is throttled and a second PRT temperature sensor measures the temperature of the steam following expansion..

The comprises a cooling tower mounted on top of a heated water reservoir. The cooling tower is manufactured from clear acrylic for visibility, and has an easily removable front face to allow different packing materials to be inserted. Two blocks of different density material and two blocks at reduced height are supplied as standard, but other material can be used for more advanced investigations. The supplied material is in robust, preformed blocks encased in clear plastic which are easy to handle and store. Water is pumped from the reservoir to the top of the tower using a variable-speed pump. An array of spray nozzles ensures an even distribution of the water throughout the column section. As the water descends through the packing material it is cooled by the air flow from the variable-speed fan, which blows air upward through the tower.

The apparatus consists of two floor-standing interconnected rigid vessels, one equipped for operation under pressure and the second under vacuum. An electrically operated air pump connected to the top of the vessels, together with valves and tappings enables the appropriate vessel to be pressurised or evacuated as required to suit the teaching exercise. The vessels can be used independently or together to enable different thermodynamic processes to be evaluated. A benchtop unit comprising a simple Deadweight Pressure Calibrator with weights to generate a range of predetermined pressures. This is connected to a Bourdon gauge and electronic pressure sensor. The essential component of the apparatus is a large, stainless steel duct which is supplied with air from a small blower via a set of damping filters. The air flow can be varied by regulating the butterfly valve situated at the blower outlet, and the flow rate calculated from the pressure drop across the blower inlet orifice as measured by the sloping manometer mounted against the back of the bench. A window is provided in the air duct to enable the various readings to be taken without disturbing the conditions inside. Instrumentation consists of two screen-type wet and dry bulb hygrometers, one giving a digital readout by means of thermistor probes and the other giving a direct readout via a glass thermometer. A further wet and dry bulb hygrometer of the aspirated type is provided in which the inclusion of an integral blower affords constant air velocity across the bulb. A sling hygrometer is included, to demonstrate a further, simple method of ventilation of the wet and dry bulb type. Finally, there are two further types of hygrometers included with the apparatus, the first being a hair hygrometer seen through the window and the second one being a Vaisala capacitance type instrument with digital readout shown on top of the bench. Humidity bench comprising large stainless steel air duct fitted with single phase blower complete with damping filters and butterfly valve on the blower outlet and a 0 to 75 mm inclined water gauge. Instruments include two screen type wet and dry bulb hygrometers one with digital readout from thermistor probes and one with direct readout from a glass thermometer, an aspirated hygrometer with integral blower, a sling hygrometer, a hair hygrometer and a Vaisala capacitance type within a bench mounted trolley.

Separating and Throttling Steam Bench consists of a sturdy framework and panels of all steel construction, fitted with a student work surface, interconnecting back panel and adjustable feet. The steam bench includes an insulated separating calorimeter, equipped with a water level sight glass, connected via fixed orifice to a lagged throttling calorimeter which exhausts to a water cooled steam condenser. A manometer is provided for measuring the pressure inside the throttling calorimeter and thermocouples are provided for measuring steam supply and temperatures which may be individually selected for display on an analogue temperature meter. Steam bench designed for determining the dryness fraction of steam. The bench includes series connected mild steel separating and throttling calorimeters, each welded in accordance with designed for a maximum working pressure of 10.34 bar and a maximum steam temperature of 235°C, and lagged with fibreglass insulation enclosed within a mild steel cover. The separating calorimeter is fitted with a graduated level gauge, protected by a clear Perspex tubular shield, and a drain line with isolating valve; the throttling calorimeter is fitted with brass orifice block, a temperature measuring point, a pressure measuring point connected to a manometer via an isolating valve, and a steam outlet line to a steam condenser with cooling water supplied from the service line, via an isolating valve, and connected to drain via a combined sight glass and check valve. Steam is supplied to the separating calorimeter from a fully insulated steam header via a steam control valve; the steam supply line having temperature and pressure measuring point fittings. Steam supply pressure is indicated on a 0???16 bar Bourdon type pressure gauge and analogue indications of temperatures are provided by a 0???250°C meter connected via toggle switch to type K thermocouples fitted at the temperature measuring points.
